Coles 4038 Ribbon Microphone | Reverb Demo Video

The Coles 4038 Ribbon Microphone (http://bit.ly/2cDf4Eb) was patented by the BBC in the 1950’s to make broadcasters sounds silky smooth on the airwaves, but has found its way into recording studios on vocals, over drums and in front of brass instruments. The reason this mic has stayed the test of time, is due to its flat recording that smooths out harsh sounds, creating larger than life sonic landscapes. Got more requests to talk about my recording setups, so I thought why not make this a more regular topic, so here’s one more about drums: when it comes to overheads I normally like to use ribbons, different mics and models, but these 2 are my absolute favorite: the Coles 4038! The reason why I use them so much for OHs is how smooth and open the drums sound, due to it’s figure of eight polarity the Coles catch a bit more of the room which makes it ideal for me. This doesn’t mean I don’t use other microphones for OHs, again I use what’s necessary to get the sound the band and I have in mind. Let me know what’s your favorite OHs mics!
