Got more requests to talk about my recording setups, so I thought why not make this a more regular topic, so here’s one more about drums: when it comes to overheads I normally like to use ribbons, different mics and models, but these 2 are my absolute favorite: the Coles 4038! The reason why I use them so much for OHs is how smooth and open the drums sound, due to it’s figure of eight polarity the Coles catch a bit more of the room which makes it ideal for me. This doesn’t mean I don’t use other microphones for OHs, again I use what’s necessary to get the sound the band and I have in mind. Let me know what’s your favorite OHs mics!
