United UT Twin48 — Two legends, one body

MASSIVE TUBE MICROPHONE SOUND — TWO LEGENDS, ONE BODY

The United UT Twin48 is a faithful preservation of two revered microphone designs from the late ’40s and ’50s — the same mics that have defined the sound of countless classic recordings. Today, demand for their tone is greater than ever. United has taken these authentic designs to the next level, combining them into a single microphone that delivers both iconic voices at your fingertips.

TWIN MODE OPERATION — BEYOND POLAR PATTERNS

The UT Twin48 isn’t just about switching polar patterns — it gives you two historically distinct cardioid systems, each with its own tonal character and polar response.

47 Mode47 Cardioid & Omni

  • True Cardioid: The rear diaphragm is de-coupled, producing higher sensitivity, greater background and top-end detail, and a larger, more open sound.

48 Mode48 Cardioid & Figure-8

  • Active Cardioid: The rear diaphragm is polarized with the same voltage as the backplate, resulting in a warmer, more intimate tone with slightly lower sensitivity.

Some engineers prefer the rich intimacy of 48 Cardioid for vocals, while others choose the expansive openness of 47 Cardioid. With both on hand, you can tailor the mic to any performance — from vocalists to horns, strings, and more — all from a single, versatile tool.

CUSTOM UNITED UT K48 CAPSULE

At the heart of the UT Twin48 is the United UT K48, a custom-built, historically correct single backplate/dual diaphragm capsule. Precision-crafted in a laboratory clean-room, it’s 24k gold-sputtered on 6-micron Mylar and optimized for 60v operation. Tuned to match the original’s smooth, natural sound, it avoids the harsh resonances or excessive sibilance found in lesser reproductions.

CUSTOM UNITED TRANSFORMERS

The UT Twin48 uses a US-made UT-BV8 transformer, wound to original Braunbuch specifications and measured against a “golden” vintage reference unit. Built with high-nickel alloy laminations and a copper Faraday shield for reduced RFI, this large, uncompromised transformer ensures the bold, harmonically rich tone that defines the originals.

NOS EF86 PENTODE TUBE

Massive tube sound demands the right tube. The UT Twin48’s amplifier stage uses a select New Old Stock EF86 pentode glass vacuum tube — the last direct descendant of the originals’ valve — chosen for its unique harmonic profile and rich tonal depth.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE POWER SUPPLY

A great tube mic deserves a great power supply — so we built one without compromise.

  • Fully discrete design with individually isolated rails for filament, B+, and polarization voltages.

  • Sparkos Labs US-made discrete regulator for filament voltage.

  • Fully discrete Zener diode regulation for high-voltage rails — no calibration required, ever.

  • US-made PRP resistors and premium, long-life electrolytic capacitors.

  • Over-spec’d linear frame-mounted power transformer.

  • EMI/RFI AC input filter plus selectable RF output filter (front-panel switch).

We avoided IC regulators, generic components, and noisy switch-mode transformers entirely to ensure the quietest possible operation.

PREMIUM CABLING INCLUDED

Every UT Twin48 ships with the finest tube microphone cable available — the Sommer Octave 7 from Germany — a 7-conductor cable configured and optimized specifically for this microphone.

TWO ICONS. ONE MICROPHONE. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.

From soaring, detailed vocals to warm, intimate performances, the UT Twin48 delivers the unmistakable soul of two studio legends — now in one uncompromising microphone.
